The Benefits of Journaling

I remember when I was little, I used to keep a journal- lord only knows what I journaled about when I was 8 or 9 but I remember the journal itself. Overtime, I gave up on that.

Then, when I was 15, I struggled heavily with anxiety so I started journaling again. And overtime, it helped me so much with my anxiety. It also give me a wonderful place to vent, record my goals, and keep track of everything that was going on. But, again, over time I started to step away from journaling. Then, in my early 20s, I went through a bad relationship and I can honestly say that journaling helped get me through it. Since then, I’ve made sure that I don’t drift away from my journals.

So, it’s pretty clear I’m a big fan of journaling, and here are my top 6 reasons that I think everyone should have a  journal and use it!

Recording your goals

Your journal is personal, and what is more personal that recording your goals and your dreams? I like to set aside a page each month to record my goals. I also use my journal as a place to just write about my goals so that I can work through issues I have with them, or get myself even more excited for them.

Keeping track of events

Are you planning an event coming up? Did something just happen that you should remember the date of?

Use your journal to keep track of it. For me, this means whenever I get a new job, whenever I start a project or when I finish something- as well as when I have family events.

Staying positive

Sometimes the world can get us down, and it’s great to be able to use your journal to vent it all out but it’s also really nice to use your journal to keep things positive! So, instead of letting your journal only be somewhere that you talk about what’s wrong- make sure you’re using it to record all the good things in your life, or just to write a list of everything you love right now.

Destressing at the end of the day

Like I said, life can get you down. Use your journal to vent about what went down- that way you can get it off your chest, start to think through it, and avoid venting to anyone about it until you have a better idea how you feel about everything.

Letting go of the past

Use your journal to work through the past- we all have trauma that we went through and sometimes we don’t even realize it until we sit down with our journal and our pen with the intention of working through some things.

Getting creative

Studies show that using a journal- for anything even if it’s just venting- will actually help boost your creativity as well as improve your mindfulness. Do you really need more reasons than that

  1. Journaling has a lot of benefits. I used to journal as a child too and then stopped. I recently have tried to pick the habit back up because I have realized how much I need it. I suffer from anxiety and depression, so having a way to get my thoughts and feelings out is so important. Thanks for sharing!
